ものや人との繋がり、そして時の流れが紡ぎ出す循環をテーマにした今季秋冬コレクション。連載二回目は、新たな取り組みによって端材から生まれた糸 「 renew – wool 」についてご紹介します。
ものの繋がりや背景を辿り、私たちが大切にしている想いをお届けします。
糸から生地へ
ブランド立ち上げ当初より、毎冬つくり続けているプレスウール。軽い着心地ながらあたたかく着られるプレスウールは、evam eva の冬の装いに欠かせないアイテムです。上質なウール糸で編んだニット地を圧縮することで、細い繊維があたたかな空気をたくさん含み、ニットならではの柔らかさが心地よく身体を包みこみます。
毎シーズン使い続けるプレスウールは、糸の選定から色にもこだわってつくっています。ウールの柔らかな風合いが圧縮されてもそのまま感じられる原料を選び、その柔らかな印象を崩さずに、シーズンカラーに合わせてオリジナルの色に染めています。原料から編み立て、仕上げの洗いまで、品質を安定させるために試行錯誤を繰り返しながら、着心地に配慮し、細やかにディテールや色を変えてきました。時代に寄り添い、小さな変化を重ねながら長く大切に着られるものを提案し続けています。
プレスウールの製品は、編地を圧縮した生地からパーツを裁断し、縫製をするため、どうしても生産過程で端材が生まれます。裁断の工程でなるべくパターンを隙間なく入れ込んだり、空いた部分を利用してノベルティをつくるなど工夫をしてきましたが、それでも捨てざるを得ない部分が出てきてしまいます。それをどうにかできないか、数年間思い続けてきたことが、手を伸ばし声を上げてみることで色々な歯車が重なり、新たな取り組みとしてアップサイクルの活動が回り始めました。
そして 糸へ
きっかけは新聞で反毛業者の記事を見かけたことから。
反毛とは不要になった衣服、糸、布地などを機械を使って粉砕し、もう一度わた状に戻すこと。大阪府泉大津では、紡績の生産工程で出た糸くずを反毛して再利用したり、他の素材と混ぜ合わせて再生させる仕組みが40年以上前から行われていることを知りました。お取引のある紡績会社のご協力のもと、私たちのものづくりを通して、想いに共感いただいたことで生地産地との取り組みがはじまりました。
2021年に生産したプレスウール製品の端材をどんな小さな切れ端もすべて反毛業者へ送りました。編地となっているプレスウールの端材を色別に粉砕して、わたに戻していきます。
まずは小さな反毛機で一定の大きさになるよう細かくしてから反毛機にかけます。刃の大きさが段階的に細かくなっていき、各工程を通ることにより徐々に細かく開繊されます。これまで不要とされていた端材がふわふわの短いわたとなって薄く重なり合って連なる光景は、職人と機械が生みだす情緒的な美しさがあります。
わたのままでは繊維が短すぎて糸にすることが出来ないため、紡績会社で繊維長の長いウールと混ぜ合わせます。素材の良さを引き立てるために新毛の種類や比率を調整しながら、徐々に細かくなる針を通り、少しずつミックスしていきます。いろいろな方向を向いた繊維をできるだけ平行に揃え、繊維の方向を変えながらわたをよく混ぜ合わせます。
軽く引っ張り、回転しながら、ウール本来の風合いを引き出すように甘く撚り合わせました。甘撚りは糸が切れやすいので、人の目で見て、切れてしまったら手で撚りなおし、繋げていきます。幾多の工程を経て、ふっくらと手で紡いだような表情豊かな糸が生まれました。
形あるものへ
再び生まれ変わった糸から纏うものへ、今まさに自社で製作しています。
一 着ごとに立体的に編むホールガーメントで編み立てます。縫い目のない仕立てで、余すことなく糸を活かしきるようにしました。編むのは機械であっても、編みのプログラミングや機械調整、糸切れや端の糸始末、アイロンで形を整えるなど、一着のニットができ上がるまでには積み重ねてきた技術と丁寧な手仕事が不可欠です。
最後に洗いで風合いを整えます。素材本来の風合いを活かしながら求める肌触りに仕上げるために、一度に洗う枚数や時間、使用する洗剤、乾燥の仕方を決めています。
襟元が少し立ち上がったプルオーバー、重ね合わせを愉しめるポンチョ、ラフに着こなせるメンズのクルーネックプルオーバーをつくりました。圧縮したプレスウールでは表現できないケーブル編みを肩のラインに施し、ニットらしいディテールを添えました。ウール本来のふっくらとした手触りがそのまま感じられる温かみのある素材感が冬の装いに合います。
素材からはじまる evam eva のものづくり。
原料から糸の太さ、撚り方、風合い、色を追求したすべての素材は大切な資源であり、なるべく無駄のないように日々自分たちができることを探りながら工夫をしてきました。ただ自分たちだけでは限界があって実現できなかったことを、つくり手の方々と手を組み、直接繋がり合うことで新しい循環をつくり出すことができました。私たちの想いを繋げ、共に考え、ものづくりに真摯に向き合っていただいた企業の方々に心から感謝いたします。
ものと人、人と人との繋がりによって新しい気づきを得て、つくる人、大切に着てくれる人たちの心が豊かになるものづくりをこれからも続けていきたいと思います。

column｜link the loop vol.2 from yarn to fabric and to yarn
The theme of this season’s fall/winter collection is to link the loop/circulation by the flow of time and the connections between things and people. In the second part of this series, we introduce “renew – wool,” a yarn created from materials that should have been discarded through a new initiative.
We trace the connections and backgrounds of things and deliver our cherished thoughts.
From yarn to fabric
Pressed wool has been produced every winter since the brand was first launched. Pressed wool, which is lightweight yet warm to wear, is an essential item for evam eva’s winter wear. By compressing knitted fabric made from high quality wool yarns, the fine fibers contain a lot of warm air, and the softness of the knit fabric wraps around the body comfortably.
We are particular about the selection of yarns and colors. We select raw materials that retain the soft texture of wool even when compressed, and dye them in our original colors to match the season’s colors. Through repeated trial and error to stabilize the quality, we have changed the details and colors with consideration for comfort. We continue to propose items that can be worn with care for a long time while staying close to the times and making small changes.
Pressed wool products are made by cutting and sewing parts from compressed knitted fabric, which inevitably produces scraps in the production process. We have tried to make the cutting process as seamless as possible, and to create novelty items using unused parts of fabric, but even so, there are still parts that must be discarded. We have been wondering for several years if there was something we could do about it, and by reaching out and speaking out, various gears came together and the upcycling activities began to turn into a new initiative.
and to yarn
It all started when we saw an article in the newspaper about a reclaimed wool supplier.
With the cooperation of a spinning company with which we do business, we have begun working with fabric production areas.
We sent all the scraps of pressed wool products produced in 2021 to a reclaimed wool company. The scraps, which are now knitted fabric, are crushed by color and turned back into wadding. The sight of the previously unneeded scraps becoming short, fluffy wadding, layered together in thin layers, is an emotionally beautiful scene created by craftsmen and machines.
Since the fibers are too short to be made into yarn as wadding, they are mixed with longer wool fibers at a spinning company. The fibers are slightly pulled and spun, and then twisted to bring out the original texture of the wool. After many processes, a fluffy and expressive yarn that looks as if it were spun by hand is born.
To the things with shape
We are producing it in-house right now from the yarn that has been reincarnated again into something to wear.
Each garment is knitted using WHOLEGARMENT, which knits each garment three-dimensionally. The machine is tailored with no seams, so that all the yarn is utilized. Even if the knitting is done by machine, the accumulated skills and careful handwork are indispensable to produce a single knitted garment, including programming and machine adjustment of the knitting, thread trimming of broken threads and ends, and ironing to shape the garment.
Finally, the texture of the knitwear is improved by washing. In order to achieve the desired feel while maintaining the original texture of the material, we decide on the number of pieces to be washed at one time, the length of time, the detergent to be used, and the drying method.
evam eva’s craftsmanship begins with materials. All materials, from raw materials to yarn thickness, twisting methods, textures, and colors, are precious resources, and we have been exploring and devising what we can do on a daily basis to minimize waste. We could not have achieved this on our own due to our limitations, but by joining hands with the makers and connecting directly with them, we were able to create a new circulation. We would like to express our sincere gratitude to all the companies that connected with us, thought together with us, and worked sincerely with us in the manufacturing process.
We would like to continue to create products that enrich the hearts of those who make them and those who wear them with care, by gaining new insights through the connections between things and people, and between people and people.
